THE IMPORTANCE OF HIFZ, AND HOW IT PROTECTS THE QUR'AN FROM BEING ALTERED
It protects the Qur'an from being altered. Just like you have the ABCs memorized, and if someone changed them, you would notice, and correct them. Having the Qur'an widely memorized by the time of the Prophet's death, and even more widely soon after, is one of the ways of preserving the Qur'an and ensuring it to be unaltered.
Since, if it was altered, you would expect to see people in China and Indonesia and India and Turkiye and Morocco and Qatar to be reciting different things. As you do with folk songs over the ages. But with this, even if all of the written copies were to be destroyed, within a few days, we would have recreated it. The knowledge would not be lost.
The responsibility of keeping past messages free from corruption was on the people who it was delivered to but they failed and altered their books to suit their whims and desires. The Qur'an is the final message to humanity and Allah (Swt) said he would protect it from corruption. That end was achieved through making the text easy to memorize. No other religious book is memorized end-to-end.
You could take away every Qur'an today but by the end of the week new copies would begin emerging through the millions of Hafiz around the world who have it memorized. A Hafiz living in Indonesia could visit a mosque in New York and correct an Imam in prayer who makes a mistake as he's reciting.
Throughout history so many different groups have held animosity towards each other but no single group dared to alter the Qur'an to their advantage against the other.
